WLAN Smart Card Consortium Leads the Industry to Replace Weak User name / Password with Proven SIM Based Technology for Hot Spots - Finalizes Incorporation and Elects 2004 Board and Officers

Dallas, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE) The WLAN Smart Card Consortium has released a complete set of specifications that allows Telecom operators to extend SIM technology for Wi-Fi hot spot authentication. The full solution consists of the newly released Handler Specification together with the WLAN SIM Specification released in September 2003.

The EAP-SIM Handler allows users to securely connect to Wi-Fi hot spots without fear of identity theft. Additionally, wireless operators are now in a position to offer a broader range of WLAN services to trusted smart card users.

The WLAN-SIM provides users with the convenience of carrying only a USB key instead of remembering ever changing complex log on procedures. Telecom operators will issue the SIM cards that fit into the USB keys in the same manner as they do for mobile phones.

This set of specifications allows Wi-Fi hot spot operators to apply SIM technology for WLAN authentication to leverage existing roaming, security, billing and back office infrastructure, said Bill Carney, Director of Business Development, Wireless Networking Business Unit of Texas Instruments, a founding member of the Consortium.

Also during its most recent meeting the Consortium finalized all of the documents required to incorporate and legally launch the Consortium, and elected Officers and Board members for 2004:

Chairman & President Bertrand du Castel, Axalto
Vice President & Technical Chair Guy Pujolle, Ucopia
Vice President & Business Chair Dan Cunningham, Raak Technologies
Secretary Hubert Coyne, Gemplus
Treasurer Eric Alzai, Oberthur Card Systems

The EAP-SIM Handler V1.0 Specification and WLAN-SIM V1.0 Specification are published on
http://WLANSmartCard.org. The next WLAN Smart Card Consortium meeting will be in Marseilles, France June 10-11.
