The WLAN Smart Card Consortium has developed the following specifications for enabling smart cards on WLAN networks
EAP Smart Card Type V00 Released September 29, 2004 The EAP Smart Card Protocol (EAP-SC) defines an EAP Method and Multiplexing model for the support of Smart Card based authentication methods. EAP-SC provides a uniform framework for interfacing with Smart Cards within the EAP context. EAP- SC provides for encapsulation of other EAP methods such as EAP- TLS, EAP-SIM and EAP-AKA. This is an IETF Draft. A text version is available here.
WLAN-SIM specification V1.0 Released October 20, 2003 Defines a smart card interface to provide authentication, session key distribution and identity management using a SIM Smart Card. Allows hot spot operators to extend SIM technology for WLAN authentication. Utilizes industry endorsed standards for authentication: 802.1x and EAP-SIM
EAP-SIM Handler specification V1.1 Released August 1, 2004 Provides specifications that ensures interoperability between a client application and smart cards that support the EAP-SIM protocol, including the WLAN-SIM smart card, UICC-EAP card and any legacy SIM smart card. Defines the exchange of the client application with the EAP-SIM server for authentication and re-authentication. Defines the exchange with the smart card to generate EAP-SIM specific identities, Authentication Codes and session keys.
